Tools for a Quicker and Easier Injury Reporting for Ohio Workplace Injuries

Employers are faced with many challenges when it comes to operating their business. One piece is the management of workers’ compensation, don’t wait for an accident to happen before developing the proper procedures to manage your Ohio workers’ compensation program. Lost days are the one factor that has the most impact on Ohio workers’ compensation premiums; therefore, it is important that any injury gets filed as quickly as possible in order to minimize days missed. Work with your Managed Care Organization (MCO) to help you develop all the tools you will need.

Employee Claim Reporting Process

One of the first steps should be to create an employee claim reporting process.

  • Determine who employees should report to if a workplace injury occurs.
    • Their immediate supervisor
    • HR Department
    • Safety Director
  • Make sure the injured employee knows your company’s preferred medical provider to treat initial injuries.
    • This is important because your preferred medical provider will be familiar with your company and your philosophy regarding the handling of workers’ compensation claims.
    • If you don’t have a preferred provider, your MCO can assist you with finding certified medical providers that are available in your area, and also help to facilitate your relationship with the provider.
  • Have all the necessary forms readily available to effectively and efficiently gather all the needed information.
    • Injury packets are a great tool to have on hand for when a workplace injury occurs.
    • Collaborate with your MCO to develop these packets.
  • Make sure the claim is reported to your MCO immediately, no more than 24 hours after the injury took place.
    • Early injury reporting is a key element for the case management of a workers’ compensation claim. The earlier the experts are notified, the sooner they can manage the claim and keep lost days to a minimum.

Putting procedures in place before the accident happens can really help when, and if, a workplace injury occurs. Remember to rely on your Ohio MCO to help you through every stage of a claim.
