Ohio Employers: If you had a workers’ comp claim in 2014, you need to complete your safety training by June 30th

The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) has identified a set of rules within the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC). According to OAC code 4123-17-68, if an employer that participates in the group rating or group retrospective rating plan sustains a claim within the “green period,” the employer shall complete either of the following:

  1. The bureau’s online accident analysis form and the bureau’s associated online safety class; or
  2. Two hours of safety training approved by the bureau.

In more simple terms, an Ohio employer participating in group rating or group retrospective rating savings programs must do extra safety training if they had a claim just before entering the group program.

For private employers participating in a 2015-2016 Rate Year group program, the “green period” is Jan. 1 to Sept. 30, 2014. This means that if your company sustained a claim between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30, 2014, you must complete additional training before June 30, 2016.

For public employers participating in a 2016 Rate Year group program, the “green period” is Jan. 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015. This means that if your organization sustained a claim in this timeframe, you must complete additional training before December 31, 2016.
