Many employers utilize safety committees to assist with their Ohio workers’ compensation program. The safety committee can review and analyze the data to determine what areas are incurring the most injuries and the causes for these injuries. Your Managed Care Organization (MCO) should be able to provide valuable data to the safety committee to review. An injury trend report is an example of a tool safety committees often use.

Areas of focus for Ohio workers’ compensation:

  • Prevention
  • Review the history of your claims to determine:
    • What is the most common cause(s)?
    • If any one department is experiencing more injuries than others, why?
    • Were any of these injuries preventable, and if so, how?
  • Safety Training
  • Safety Equipment
  • Modifications to work areas

Other areas of focus

  • Evacuation plan
  • Disaster recovery plan
  • Active Shooter training and plan
  • Tornado drill and plan
  • OSHA training and reporting

Safety Committees should be established for the following purposes:

  • To promote and maintain the interest of employees in health and safety issues.
  • To educate managers, supervisors and employees through awareness and training activities that they are primarily responsible for the prevention of workplace accidents.
  • To help make health and safety activities an integral part of the organization’s operating procedures, culture and programs.
  • To provide an opportunity for the free discussion of health and safety problems and possible solutions.
  • To inform and educate employees and supervisors about health and safety issues, new standards, research findings, etc.
  • To help reduce the risk of workplace injuries and illnesses.
  • To help ensure compliance with federal and state health and safety standards

After you have established your Safety Committee, include your MCO in your monthly/quarterly safety committee meetings. Your MCO can provide valuable input regarding your Ohio workers’ compensation claims as well as your overall program. Utilize your safety committee in conjunction with the experts, your Ohio MCO to maximum results.
