David Arn, an Industrial Safety Consultant Specialist with the BWC, was the speaker of the monthly Cincinnati Safety Council meeting. His presentation was geared toward Safety Management for the Non-Safety Professional. Below are some of our biggest takeaways from David’s presentation:
Why invest in safety?
- You will save people (literally and figuratively- people that feel safe are more likely to stick around)
- You will save money
- You will save face
Priorities: Safety vs. Quality vs. Production vs. Cost
- Safety programs fail when it is a priority, but not a value (priorities can change, values are steady)
- Safety programs fail when production is paramount
- Safety programs fail when only short-term costs are the focus
- Safety programs fail when there isn’t a culture of continuous improvement
What rights do employees have under OSHA?
- Employees have the right to a safe and healthy workplace
- Enforced via citations and penalties
- While 12 workers die everyday in work-related accidents (as of 2013,) the rate of workplace injuries has fallen by 3x since OSHA was instituted.
