David Arn, an Industrial Safety Consultant Specialist with the BWC,  was the speaker of the monthly Cincinnati Safety Council meeting. His presentation was geared toward Safety Management for the Non-Safety Professional. Below are some of our biggest takeaways from David’s presentation:

Why invest in safety?

  • You will save people (literally and figuratively- people that feel safe are more likely to stick around)
  • You will save money
  • You will save face

Priorities: Safety vs. Quality vs. Production vs. Cost

  • Safety programs fail when it is a priority, but not a value (priorities can change, values are steady)
  • Safety programs fail when production is paramount
  • Safety programs fail when only short-term costs are the focus
  • Safety programs fail when there isn’t a culture of continuous improvement

What rights do employees have under OSHA?

  • Employees have the right to a safe and healthy workplace
  • Enforced via citations and penalties
  • While 12 workers die everyday in work-related accidents (as of 2013,) the rate of workplace injuries has fallen by 3x since OSHA was instituted.

Thank you David for your insight on safety in the workplace. We are looking forward to next months meeting!
