Many startup companies often address HR situations using a reactive strategy, due to there not being a designated full-time HR employee. This can lead to gaps in the department.

Below are four signs that show you need improve the processes of your HR department:

1. If you’re using apps instead of having an HR department.
We are seeing more and more apps on the market, and many of them can be used to help the HR department at your company. However these apps aren’t meant to replace your HR department. An app can’t create a good company culture, give your employees a positive experience, or provide an HR strategy. It is important to have real people maintaining your HR department. If you are looking at adding an HR department, ask your employees what is lacking and how an HR department could fix these functions. With this feedback you can start assessing the gaps within your HR department.

2. If you’re using a reactive strategy to deal with HR situations as they arise.
Often times in startup companies, there isn’t an HR department. Therefore, many employees will fulfill HR tasks as they come along. Since there isn’t one full time person fulfilling this role, there can be gaps in the system. Because of this reactive strategy, many companies can find themselves in difficult situations. The best way to prevent this from happening is to determine if your company is currently using a reactive strategy to deal with compensation, performance management, employee relations, and benefits. If so then implementing a proactive strategy will help your company’s ROI and stability.

3. If there are inexperienced employees handling the HR functions of your company.
It takes skill and experience to help a company navigate HR operations. In an HR department there are many legal aspects as well as compliance that need to be attended to. No matter the size of your company, you must employ someone who can help minimize employee risk and prevent the company from potential problems.

4. Simply not having an HR department.
It is costly to not have an HR department. The pre-employment, employment, and post-employment processes for any company are hard to manage, and need time and attention. If they aren’t properly maintained there could be legal consequences.
