Preventing workplace accidents can save your business time and money. One of the easiest ways is analyzing data to notice trends and make improvements.

Get the Right Workplace Injury Data

Here are some examples of injury data employers can gather on various aspects of a claim:
• Type of claim
• Number of claims by body part
• Day of the week injury occurred
• Number of Injuries by position
• Number of injuries by department/location

By gathering this information employers can determine the most frequent injuries, the most costly injuries, and look for trends providing insights to the cause. This will allow employers to evaluate their workplace and safety practices for improvements helping prevent further accidents.

For example, an employer reviewed their injury trend report and noticed they were experiencing many trips and falls. They also realized they had an aging workforce.

To reduce this type of injury the employer:
1. Evaluated their lighting to make sure all areas were well lit
2. Eliminated any trip hazards (i.e., cords running across the floors)
3. Painted the steps different colors/ added a different color on the edge of each step, making them more noticeable

Using injury trend reports, other employers have implemented safety goggles, slip resistant shoes, different gloves, and other personal protective equipment, reducing workplace injuries. These employers were then able to determine how much they could have lowered their claims cost by implementing these changes.

Gather and review your injury data with your Ohio Managed Care Organization (MCO) to come up with suggestions for injury prevention. Doing this on a regular basis can reduce your workplace injuries and your costs overtime.
