New York City employers are reviewing their company policies and practices to ensure they meet the requirements of this new law because the New York City Council has voted to require employers to provide their workers with sick days. The legislation requires New York City private-sector employers, outside of the manufacturing industry, to provide paid (or unpaid, for certain employers) sick time to employees.

For some employers, this law won’t change their policies. Employers covered by the legislation who already provide paid leave sufficient to meet the requirements of the legislation are not required to provide additional sick time.

For other employers, they will need to make revisions to ensure they are in compliance. Even businesses not covered by the paid sick time requirement must provide the same amount of sick time to their employees, although such time may be unpaid.
