Your fleet drivers have a tough enough time navigating the roads on the typical day. During the holiday season, traffic increases, people are in a hurry, and the weather can be unpredictable – making the daily haul for your fleet team even more treacherous. Extra precautions are needed during this time of the year to ensure that everyone on the road arrives to their destinations safely. Here are a few fleet safety tips for your team this holiday season.
Remove snow and ice
Clear your windows and roof of snow to ensure you have maximum visibility and avoid creating a hazard for the vehicle behind you. Do not allow ice and snow to create additional blind spots on your vehicle.
Take it easy
Chances of a crash nearly triple when driving faster than surrounding traffic. Skidding becomes more likely at increased speeds, especially on icy roads, or if you are driving a sleigh like Santa. And remember, buckling up is a must. A safety belt will not prevent a collision, but it will save a life.
Avoid impaired drivers
Report drunk drivers to 911 – after safely pulling over – and stay on the line to help locate the suspected vehicle. A call can save lives. Erratic breaking, weaving between lanes, straddling the centerline or taking excessively wide turns can all be signs of impaired driving.
Stay focused
Distracted driving is a major cause of traffic accidents and one of the leading causes of death amongst teenagers. Even just two seconds of distraction time doubles the chances of an accident. Use your cell phone when stopped and never text while driving. Technology gifts are popular during the holiday season, but should not be operated while driving.
Be prepared
Check to make sure your emergency kits are properly packed. Check to be sure your fire extinguisher is in date, your jumper cables are in your vehicles and your first-aid kit is stocked. You should have a battery powered radio, a flashlight, blanket, non-perishable foods and bottled water on board in case you are in an accident or get stranded. These things can also be used to assist any stranded motorists you come across.
