Election day is fast approaching and many of your employees may be planning to come in late, take a long lunch, or leave a little early to head to the polls. While it may seem like an effort best left out of the office, encouraging employees to take part in the voting process can actually be very beneficial for your business and your employees overall. Learn more about how you can help your employees exercise their civic responsibilities, while benefiting your workplace.
When and where to vote
Election day is always the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November. This year, election day falls on November 6. Ohio polls are open from 6:30am to 7:30pm. Voters may also drop off absentee ballots at their local board of elections until 7:30pm.
First time voters or those who have recently moved may need some help finding their polling location so make sure that you spread the word about how employees can easily access that information.
Give them time
Ohio law requires that employers give employees a reasonable amount of time to vote on election day. While the state does not clarify exactly how much time is reasonable, you should consider the polling lines and wait times in each employee’s precinct. Salaried employees are eligible for paid time off to vote.
Benefits for your business
Promoting political engagement and encouraging employees to vote is a concrete demonstration that you value your workers and their lives outside of the office. By helping workers to vote you empower them to use their voice and shape their communities, showing that respect their opinions and well-being, which can help build a more committed and engaged workforce.
Engaged citizens become more well-rounded employees. Those who actively participate in the voting process are more likely to research policies, be informed on current events and involved in the local community – all of which can help them get a firmer grasp on the wider context in which your business operates. By being more informed, your employees can stay ahead of the curve on future policies or laws that could affect how your company.
Additionally, voter efforts can help boost your public image. As a simple, no-cost way to demonstrate that you care about your community and customers, you may discover that these activities lead customers and other companies to want to do more business with you. You’ll probably also find that these efforts lead to more successful recruiting efforts among millennials and Generation Z workers.
