Don’t be basic. Get out of your engagement rut by utilizing some more creative ways to engage with your employees. Your employees are the lifeblood of your company and they deserve to feel valued for the hard work they put in each day. Genuinely engaging with your employees not only allows for a friendlier workplace, but also creates a more loyal and productive workforce. Read on for a look at new takes on employee engagement.

Hold office hours

Take a page from academia by holding office hours to make your upper management more approachable to the entire company. Don’t require appointments or ask employees to submit topics beforehand. Allow employees to drop in during office hours to talk about concerns, bounce new ideas around, and generally talk shop. These informal chats help to break down traditional barriers that can create stagnation and prevent the free flow of new ideas between upper management and regular employees.

Break bread together

Have employees who love to cook or bring in treats from their favorite restaurant? Go ahead and select a standing “Food Day” where one employee brings in treats to share with the rest of the team. Have a large crew? Feel free to break “Food Day” up between departments. Sharing food together can be a major bonding moment for your team and gives employees the opportunity to show off their cooking skills.

Office DJ

We all get the end of the workweek drag…those last few hours on Friday afternoon when everyone is starting to wind down. Give your team a boost by letting employees add song to a weekly playlist that gets played over the PA or phone system during those final few hours of work for the week. Consider selecting one or two DJs for each Friday and letting them create the playlist throughout the week. People love sharing their musical taste with others and introducing people to a new band or genre can be a powerful engagement experience for your team.

Celebrate people

We all like when our work is recognized but showing that you value your employees as people is equally important. Celebrate important milestones and your employees’ passions outside of work just as you do those in the workplace. Acknowledge community awards that an employee might receive, bring in cupcakes for their birthday, and throw them a baby or wedding shower. By showing that you value your employees more than just as worker bees, you will gain their loyalty.

Give employees a roadmap

Just because an employee may have started in an entry-level position doesn’t mean that they want to stay in that position long-term. Talk to your employees about their career goals and help them develop a roadmap to get there. If possible, offer employees the opportunity to attend conferences or trainings that can help them achieve their goals. Create opportunities for mentorship of less experienced employees by more experienced employees; and, whenever possible, use that mentorship program to groom employees for promotion from within.
